Stylecraft Launches Second Crochet Along with Jane Crowfoot

Following the incredible success of last year’s Lily Pond CAL, Stylecraft and Jane Crowfoot are delighted to launch this year’s project – Frida’s Flowers.

Created using Stylecraft’s Classique Cotton, Jane explains her inspiration: “Many years ago I visited an exhibition of the work of Mexican Artist Diego Rivera – I was totally enthralled by his work and his life, so inevitably then learnt more and more about his wife Frida Kahlo. It is Frida herself who captivates me, rather than her art – she was a devotee of traditional Mexican dress and wore incredible outfits and costumes throughout her life, often ignoring fashions and conventions.”

As you can see Jane has based the design, formed of multiple hexagons, on traditional Mexican tapestry, embroidery and crewel work, using flowers as the initial inspiration. “Frida was a lover of flowers and grew many traditional species within the gardens of her home. Many of her clothes were intricately decorated with flowers and she almost always wore them in her hair,” she says.  Jane decided to use Classique Cotton because of the extensive colour palette and the way the yarn really captures the folkloric embroideries of Mexico.

CALS have grown so much in popularity in recent years as Annabelle Hill, Sales and Marketing Director of Stylecraft explains: “Crocheting can be a solitary occupation, so it is nice for crocheters to feel like they belong to something and can access help and advice if needed. Dividing large projects into ‘doable’ chunks makes the prospect of working through it far more attractive.”  We know we are certainly looking forward to this project starting.

The finished project will measure 90cm wide & 120cm long and uses 12 colours and 30 balls in the new ball size of 50g of Classique Cotton launched this season by Stylecraft. The Frida’s Flowers CAL launches on 5th April 2016 and will continue over 16 weeks. Stylecraft have already set up a Facebook group especially for the project and there will be lots of hints and tips along the way including a Q&A on Twitter during May.
